Agent Mary Kole of Andrea Brown Literary Agency is having a query contest over on her blog. Basically, Mary will choose the best query letter out of all of the entries and award the winner a 30-page critique! (You can read about the contest rules here.)
The only catch? I just found out about the contest and the deadline is Halloween night at 11:59PM! (Ack, that's tomorrow!) So get your queries spiffed up and get in your entry ASAP!
Good luck!

www.Fashify.com
Outstanding work Caroline Richmond. The new Shopoholic writer and creative juice mixer for the fashion website- www.fashify.com. I read your articles and am ready to tape my bum toe and pull out my stacked pumps- which yes I actually own some of those shoes from the last time they were in fashion. Instead of pairing my Kiss rock star pumps with a wool skirt, I'm wearing a flimpsy cotton dress. Look out Publix grocery store patrons, I'm in fashion!

I did it
I sent one of my picture books to Sylvan Dell Publishing! They publish fiction picture books with strong tie-ins to science or math and that align to state curricula. (They put activities/lessons in the back of each book for teachers to use.)
No one at work understood my angst after I hit "send"...they don't understand it's like sending your child out into the cold, cruel world alone to get hurt and rejected! (Of course, we all hope they get loved and accepted!) We can only hope Phyllis Pine Cone is loved by all who get to know her!

Gathered up my courage and hit Authonomy
Hey guys! Just wanted you to know that I finally gathered up enough courage to put some of BUMP on Authonomy. I didn't post the whole MS- that makes me kind of nervous and I am still changing some things. Maybe in the future.
If you have time, please give it a look. I took lots of your suggestions and have transformed the first 4 chapters. Hopefully it is improved since you last saw it!

Elevator Pitch
Hey all, long time no type ;)
Hope you are all doing well. Steph- sorry to hear about your job difficulties. Sending well wishes your way.
Congrats Janet! Don't know if I will be able to make it down next October, but we are planning on being in Florida in the summer (2010). My girls are wanting to go to Sea World summer camp (if they can raise half the tuition). I think we will be in the Naples/Orlando areas at that time.
So, on to my writing comments. Last weekend, I attended the Pacific Coast Children's Writers Workshop. It was 2 1/2 days of intensives with an author (Marion Dane Bauer), an agent from Jennifer DiChiara (sp), and an editor from Alfred Knopf. It was great. Hearing the lectures from Marion made the price of the workshops worth every penny. She is a fabulous source of helpful information and encouragement.
One of the things that we tried at the conference was the creation of an "elevator pitch." You all probably know this, but an elevator pitch is a 2 sentence blurb on your story that you could give to an editor or agent if you only had a few minutes in an elevator with them. One sentence gives a little info about the novel, the other gives the listener a frame of reference for the underlying feel of the story. Steven Frasier recommended that we all develop this to help promote our work at conferences, etc. So, here was my attempt.
Bump is a contemporary novel about the choices a fifteen year old makes when she discovers she is pregnant. It is Footloose meets Judy Blume, with a touch of Secret Life.
Let's hear your elevator pitches!!
BTW- I received a critique from Mr. Frasier. He loved my first 2 chapters and wants to see the full MS. I am very excited, but a little freaked out at the same time. I still feel like there are some kinks that need to be worked out before I send it in to anyone.

My most recent accomplishment is to be the 2010 Conference Director for the Florida Writer's Association. I hope you can make it down here next October.

Why is waiting the hardest part?
I entered J.T Middleton in the Delacorte Dell Yearling Contest, and now I have to wait to hear how well they liked it. Of course, the longer I wait the more they liked it, so I don't really want to hear anything until October. However, I am not by nature a patient person!
